Understanding business activities as a starting point

Multimodal approach

Digital strategy concerns the entire organization; therefore, it is important to have a clear view of the coherence between the business and the impact of digital developments on those business activities.

The customer’s business activities are the starting point for characterizing and describing an organization. Together with the customer, we divide the business activities into two characteristics: the activity adds value for customers, and to what extent is the activity specific.

These two attributes allow a classification of business activities into 4 basic types. This format supports the search for the best suitable solution in terms of organization, way of working and management, and IT services. The value of this is that customers get a good understanding of various aspects that play a role in the execution of that activity.

The analysis of activities leads to enthusiastic and sometimes fundamental discussions among customers about what type of activity is. The company’s vision of the market and its services play an important role in this. The outcome of the discussion provides a solid basis for looking for solutions for the design of the IT landscape and the organization. Business and IT sit at the same table and speak the same language; they work together for the company’s strategic objectives.
